Hungary supports solution to Ukraine conflict through diplomacy
Hungary opposes any measures that may exacerbate the situation in Ukraine while supporting efforts aimed at resolving the conflict through negotiations, the foreign minister said in Brussels on Monday.
Péter Szijjártó said everything must be done to prevent a new Cold War from emerging, adding the historic standoff had resulted in “several wasted decades” for central Europe.
“We don’t want to fall prey to any East-West conflict,” the minister said.
Hungary backs direct talks, he said, adding that “all the hysteria needs to stop”.
Regarding the possibility of intensified sanctions against Russia, Szijjártó said it would be worth assessing the impact of existing sanctions on the economic cooperation of various countries with Russia.
Szijjártó said central Europe was heavily reliant on Russian energy supplies.
“Those who are now the loudest in demanding sanctions have a big role to play in maintaining” the status quo.
He called on the sides in negotiations to take central European countries into account when “addressing the future of this sharpening East-West conflict”.
Szijjártó said Hungary had no plans to evacuate its diplomats or their families from Kiev. Neither has it updated its advice on travel to Ukraine, he added.
The minister said
not that every single NATO ally shared the exact same assessment of the Ukraine situation.
Nor was there a full consensus on possible measures, he added.
As regards the upcoming meeting of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Szijjártó said it was “natural” for them to hold talks. He called criticism of the meeting “unserious”. The minister added:
“When will US President Joe Biden or Secretary of State Antony Blinken be critised for recently meeting their Russian counterparts on several occasions?”

President Biden is escalating the rhetoric between Ukraine and Russia. Some news agencies are saying that 8,500 US soldiers are being committed but none of the troops will be placed in the Ukraine. News agencies are saying that these troops will be placed in Eastern Europe. Since there is no concrete evidence that President Putin wants to attack or invade Ukraine, Eastern Europe should reject accepting American soldiers on its territory. Hungary, like Germany, should not join NATO in this disastrous game. No. I do not have a great love for Russia, Ukraine and many Western EU nations. However, there is not need to murder Europeans and ruin infrastructure for Biden’s game that is suppose to distract from his incredibly bad internal policies, e.g. inflation, crime, unprotected border, supply chain just to name a few.
The Hungarian Empire supports a diplomatic solution…. PATHETIC!!!
A small irrelevant country that thinks anyone gives a F about what they support.
Anonymous and yet you read the Hungarian Daily News articles about Hungarian politics. So you must give an F about what the Hungarian government supports.
Small irrelevant individual that you are.
It’s quite understandable Russia feels threatened. We should have NATO troops withdraw from Hungary. We have nothing to fear from Russia, they are generally a very reasonable country these days. And NATO presence other than our own military just unnecessarily antagonizes Russia. Our Government will manage the rest – like they are doing very well, now

Europe does not need another war. Only armament manufacturers (globalists) gain. Since the US is supplying most gear, the US will benefit, not the American people, they just get to foot the bill. The globalists are celebrating, logical leaders should just take away their desserts.
At the end of the Nato/EU-Russian conflict, Ukraine may end up just as Georgia did in 2008 coincidentally during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Ukraine is a split identity of people between West and East. Among many differences, the people are divided about Ukraine’s membership in the European Union or the Customs Union of Russia Belarussia Kazakhstan. Considering that most of the leadership in Russia is still from the Soviet era, they believe that NATO and the EU are a direct threat to Russia’s economic, political, and security sovereignty. Right or wrong, they believe that NATO’s expansion has violated the West’s past promises. Western recognition of the break up of Yugoslavia is more proof that the West does not keep its promises. Hungary is in a dual position and could sway what happens between the two profoundly opposing sides. Hungary is a NATO member but refuses to allow the US to send troops. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán might be the only person V Putin is listening to delay or hold off from removing Kyiv as the governing head. According to Russia’s approach, they want to allow Oblastnaya autonomy to each of the remaining Ukrainian districts, and Ukraine would maintain its status as Ukraine under a Monroe Doctrine style relationship. In a new Ukraine, Lviv could become the defacto Capital, first among equals. Or perhaps a cold war German Berlin-style east-west could appear with a wall built between east and west Ukraine, with possibly a portion of Ukraine going back to Hungary (thus, Hungary is secretly onboard). The third scenario is that the old Lithuania, Poland Prussia regions eventually merge from the Three states initiative. In any event, gas prices and heating oil will skyrocket, especially if Ukraine or Russia decide to disrupt the pipelines that feed into Europe. The only time for Russia to make such a move is now because, in 5-10 years, Ukraine will be too expensive for Russia to act militarily to support their state security. The fallout of any long occupation would most likely be devastating to the Russian economy and military far beyond the scale that Afghanistan cost the Soviets.
The Three Seas Initiative (3SI or TSI), also known as the Baltic, Adriatic, Black Sea (BABS) Initiative, is a forum of twelve states in the European Union, running along a north-south axis from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic and Black Seas in Central and Eastern Europe.
Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
No one would have predicted that politics in Ukraine would spill over into fighting and gunshots in Kyiv and Odesa in 2014. Maidan is a harbinger of what is to come where Ukrainian soldiers and police could turn on their own Ukrainian units as Russian soldiers enter to secure the region. This will most likely cause 2-10 million refugees to flow west into Poland and Hungary. Unfortunately, many of today’s influential people on all sides have played a destructive role in creating fear, dislike, and distrust among the people who follow them. We do not question our media as we have in the past, which aggravates and enflames the subject matter to polarize the public into tribal positions. It is now the burden of our youth to take the lead to solve this dilemma. Naturally, the ordinary citizen does not want war. Not in Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Europe, Nigeria, Syria, or the US. We understand that it is not the people but the leaders who determine policy, and with the internet it is too easy to herd the people along. With or without a meme, podcast or app, in a democracy, dictatorship, parliament, or communist government, the people can always be counted on to affirm a leader that support their views. In general, it is easy to tell followers they are being attacked and denounce those who speak of peace as those without patriotism, then expose the country to danger. Goering 101.
